While listening to music, we somehow make sense of a multiplicity of auditory events; for example, in popular music we are often able to recognize whether the current section is a verse or a chorus, and to identify the boundaries between these segments. This organization occurs at multiple levels, since we can discern motifs, phrases, sections and other groupings. In this work, we understand segment boundaries as instants of significant change. This work studies the characteristics of musical expressiveness in children’s performances through comparison of musical structures and behavioral patterns in executing music. The aim is to offer effective information useful in instrumental teaching, and elements of comparison with the performance of advanced students and mu-sicians. Three ten-year-old piano students learned a piece previously unknown from Bartok’s Mikrokosmos. The Relationship Between Musical Structure and Emotion in Classical Piano Scores : A Case Study on the Theme of La Folia

We explored the relationship between musical structure and emotion on different variations of La Folia – a musical theme of Portuguese origin based on a standard harmonic progression. Our approach aims to extend previous research by investigating more factors and comparing different models for music emotion. In a pilot study, 12 participants rated the emotion associated to the stimuli on a graduate scale from 1 to 10, according to 3 different models for music emotion: the valence/arousal-based emotion model (Russell, 1980), a discrete emotion approach (Izard, 1972), and the Geneva Emotional Music Scale (GEMS) (Zentner et al., 2008).
